It is ever so frustrating when legalities and egos stifle creativity and condemn what would otherwise be a chart-topping album to the doldrums. This was definitely the case for Danger Mouse’s epic merge of Jay-Z’s “Black Album” and The Beatles “White Album” to create, funnily enough, “The Grey Album”. I was fortunate enough to own a copy of this on vinyl and it is incredible. Granted, some of the tracks were a bit of a reach, but in the most part the album was a spectacle of superior production techniques. The standout track for me has always been this mashup of The Beatles’ “Julia” and Jay-Z’s “Dirt Off Your Shoulder”. The beat is intense and, in my humble opinion, some of Jay-Z’s greatest work appeared on the “Black Album”, so this marriage just sings to me.
